めりこむ【滅り込む】

sink 《into the ground》; fall [cave] in.

●足元の地面がめり込んだ. The ground sank [The earth gave (way)] under his feet.

・足元がめり込むような感じがした. I felt the ground give under my feet.

・荷車が泥にめり込んだ. The cartwheels stuck in the mud [were bogged down].
